The Tiger Cubs program is for beginner players born between the years 2002 and 2005 that have at least minimal skating skills. They will skate on Saturday and Sundays mornings at Baker Rink on the Princeton University Campus. The Tiger Cub program will begin on October 3rd and run through February, 2010. CLICK HERE to view the Tiger Cub schedule.
The format of our program will be broken down into segments of: Coaching Development, Power Skating and Games (half ice games). Each week, the teams play a rotation schedule of cross-ice games after a period of group practice. The emphasis in the Tiger Cubs program is on improving skating and stick-handling skills. Players will be grouped based on ability with the opportunity to move through groups as the players progress.
Exclusive to Tiger Cubs is our on-ice Power Skating instructor that is available at all sessions to ensure that your child is skating to his/her potential.
Tiger Cubs will be broken down into mini-teams that will be grouped upon evaluation of skills. There will be a Head Coach assigned to each team. The Head Coach’s main job will be to adhere to the PYHA philosophy and remember that the objective is to have fun and learn the game of hockey. Scores are recorded, and goalies are simply one of the players who take turns tending goal. Players rotate on and off the ice for 2 minutes shifts, running time, with no penalties or stoppage of the clock.
We utilize the USA Hockey Skill Development Program Level B & C, which covers skating, stopping, turning, puck handling, passing, shooting and positioning.
Registration fees for the season is $450.00 that can be paid in two installments. The first payment is due upon registration and is $200. Additional payment of $250 will be due on December 1st.
The program assumes that the player has at least minimal skating skills. Players will be evaluated at the beginning of the season to assure proper placement within the program.
Our goal is to develop:
• A fun learning environment;
• A safe and positive experience for the child’s first contact with club hockey;
• A fundamentally sound hockey player
REQUIRED EQUIPMENT:
If you need to purchase equipment, please see footnote below. We have arranged a special package deal program with Play It Again Sports in Hamilton, NJ.
Helmet & full-face shield - The helmet must be approved by the Hockey Equipment Certification Council (HECC) and must be accompanied by a full-face shield that provides full facial protection, and any chin protection that accompanies the full-face shield.
Internal mouthpiece (optional, but highly recommend) - A colored (non-clear) internal mouthpiece must cover all teeth of one jaw, customarily the upper.
Shoulder pads - The cap of the shoulder pad should cover the shoulder. Straps under the arms should attach securely. The front flap should come down far enough to cover the collarbone.
Elbow pads - Straps should remain tight, providing a snug fit over the elbow. Elbow pads should extend down the forearm to the top of the glove.
Shin pads - Shin pads should cover the leg from the top of the skates to above the knees, overlapping a few inches above the bottom of the hip pads or hockey pants. The knee is a primary area of concern for protection. The pad should cover the knee when the leg is straight and when it is bent at the knee. Pads should bend just below the knee in order to conform to the bent leg.
Supporter and cup - This is essential protective equipment for boys and girls; check for proper fit.
Gloves - Gloves should have ample room for the fingers and thumb and must not be too snug in the wrist area. The cuff of the glove should come up far enough to adequately cover the wrist area, extending up to the bottom of the elbow pads.
Hockey Pants - Pants sizes are usually six sizes larger than the normal waist size. Hockey suspenders are recommended to keep the pants in place. The top padded portion of the pants should cover the hips, lower ribs and kidneys. The bottom of the pants legs should be an inch or two above the knees, overlapping with the top of the shin pads. The area above the knee is often hit by the puck, so make sure there is no gap between the pants and the knee pad. Pants must be held up by suspenders which can be purchased at sporting goods stores.
Jersey and socks - Jerseys should be large enough so that movement is not restricted. Socks should be held up by a garter belt which can be purchased at the pro shop or sporting goods stores.
NOTE: All Tiger Cubs players will receive a Princeton Tigers jersey, however; each should have an extra jersey and one extra pair of socks, especially to bring to the first couple of sessions.
